Well, a friend. Hmph. You know I'm not quite sure what defines a friend. You see, a friend is an open and vague term. There's acquaintances, former roommates, long lost cousins, strangers that say hi, that gentlemen with the semper fi hat that bought you a beer, past lovers, and even Mormons that accept you just the way you are so you can talk about Jesus.

I guess if we're being specific there's a lot of things that may or may not constitute being a friend. Shall we define what a "friend" is here and there? Pepper in a little seasoning and let the "friend" decide if they are worth their salt?

If you said "Yes" read on. If you said "No" that's ok. We'll have time for you later. There's always time. Sounds like a great Ecuadorian saying doesn't it? You see, they perscribe to a time held belief that time is of the essence. And that essence is LIFE.

In Ecuador things like smiles, hugs, and kisses are normal between friends. They believe it's a sign of loyalty and respect. It means you are there for that person. To me, that's what a friend is. Someone that shows up. Even if it's late.

You see, being late to them isn't a disrespectful gesture. It's a sign that you are there for other people too, and sometimes you just need time to your self.

But I wouldn't say it's a good thing either. Depending on the situation it may mean you need to slow down and stop spending so much essence on other people. Some of that time belongs to you. To your wishes, to your dreams.

It's a delicate balance, it always is. Sometimes you simply need to slow down because there's something there you should take. And take it you should. I haven't been taking for myself because I didn't realize that was an option. I had no idea that the Lord in his infinite wisdom wanted me to take something he placed on the path and expend some of it's energy. (That means I think he wants me to make money on something, and the way I use that money is up to me and Him and it's great)

So what are friends to me? Well, that depends on the day. Some days it's too easy and some days it's a little too late. That's a reference to showing up on time. Sometimes I need you to respond right away. If not I may have to move on and focus on other things. But most importantly, it's the people that just make a difference when my life is at a crossroads. Seems like an important job, but it ain't. Sorry, I've picked up on the local lexicon. Ain't, ain't a word, and I ain't gonna say it.

For those of you that ain't on board. I ain't gonna say it twice.

Mark Twain! All Aboard!
